Bulk Landscape Material Supply
Black Dirt
What Sets Our Black Dirt Apart?
- Dry
- Our stockpile is tarped so that the soil you receive is dry and spreadable.
- Fertile
- Finely-graded ag lime is added to achieve a neutral pH.
- A light dose of seed starter ferilizer is added to encourage root development.
- Finely-Graded
- Before sifting the soil, we dry it and pulverize it. This gives our soil a fine texture which maximizes seed-to-soil contact.
- Consistent
- Each individual batch of soil is a blend of soils sourced from numerous locations throughout western Wisconsin, this makes the finished product a synthesis of different soil types and biology (microbes and fungi).
- Saves You Labor
- Our black dirt is easy to handle, many utility companies who do reclamation work choose to buy from Krolls due to how much labor it saves them.
- Homeowners, rather than spending money to hire a contractor or rent a machine to spread the dirt, you might just choose to do it by hand after experiencing how easy it is to handle.
Organic Compost
Our compost is most-commonly utilized as a natural fertilizer and soil amendment for gardening, flower beds, and lawns. Applying our compost by hand will be easy since it is screened and pulverized right before leaving our yard.
What’s Special About Our Compost?
- Clean
- Sourced from our own horse stable and a select few other local stables. Horse waste is cleaner than other farm animal wastes due to the fact that horses are not grown for production so they do not have extreme diets like other farm animals. Other animals are grown as fast as possible and grouped together in close quarters which tends to require more medications/chemicals.
- The wood shavings in the compost are made from 100% natural log grindings.
- Uniform
- Once in a windrow, we turn the compost once per week for 2 months and then allow it to cure. Turning the windrow regularly helps break down all the materials into a homogenous mixture.
- Although we do turn the hot windrows regularly and kill most of the weed seeds, there are still a few weeds that make it through the process.
- Mature
- Our compost takes 1 year from the time of initial mixing of raw materials to selling the finished product. This allows our compost to cure fully and for microbial and fungal populations to develop.
- Fluffed
- We agitate our compost and pass it through a 1/2″ screen directly before selling. This makes our compost easier to work with and it gets rid of any rocks larger than a skittle.
